White Sox Fall Again in Beantown, Lose 8-2 (Game 135, ’08)
The White Sox have been thoroughly outplayed and outpitched this series. When I watch the White Sox play the Red Sox, Rays, and Angels, I see the Sox are the fourth-worst team of all of them. The White Sox have at least three, and possibly four teams in the American League that are better than they are. Buehrle was not good, giving up 7 earned runs over 4 and 2-thirds innings. The shaky pitching and the Sox’ uncanny inability to hit with 2 outs and runners in scoring position may cost this team a playoff spot. Most importantly perhaps, I miss watching good baseball. To a certain extent, it’s not just about making the playoffs. It’s about good baseball, and the White Sox don’t play good baseball on a consistent enough basis. They make too many mental mistakes and seem to be simply ‘rolling along’ instead of driving forward with a mission. This team appears to be going through the motions, with little urgency. That has to change, but I’m skeptical it will…
